i am a painting contractor and have painted many black walls both residentially and commercially and if you have the land lords blessing and you want black go for it ...black is usually used as an accent wall just as you are planning to do ..the only thing i woulr reccomend is to use an acrylic or egshell paint to get better durability as the darker colors show daily wear a lot easier so you will want something you can safely wipe clean...if you use a flat black you will no more than brush a shirtsleeve against it and it will leave a mark...go eggshell and youll be fine.If the house you rent they let you paint the walls, would you think twice about painting a wall black?
Since my husband is a house painter the answer would be yes. Black is very hard to cover. You have to use a good primer like Kilz to put over the black to get rid of it and it is a lot of work. If you dont mind the extra work then go for it.Try using Black broadcloth on the wall instead of paint . That way when he changes his mind it is easy to remove and put something else up. Broadcloth runs about 2.95 yard at Walmart and you can attach it to the wall with small staples and then but some trim ove it and I have seen it done and it looks great and no harm done to the walls!

The landlord probably assumes you will be using good judgment pertaining to the colors. Black and gold are not good choices. You may end up having to pay to have the room re-painted when your son moves out. I would clarify with the landlord the colors before I painted.
I'd be a considerate tenant and get the kid posters instead.

Our landlord also we could paint our walls 'light' colors that he could repaint with one coat, or if we go with darker colors we would have to repaint them prior to moving out. I would be consider and ask him about such dark colors. Just a thought to consider--my daughter painted her walls dark navy blue along time ago, with lime green accents. It looked cool but the room was very very hot in the summer, and it took many coats to cover when we were repainting to sell the house.
If the landlord says you can do whatever you want to do as far as painting goes then do it. He is taking full responsibility since he didn't give you any limitations on how to paint. However, I would get this in writing just to protect you. He could find you paint it black and he would turn around and get on your case....
Would not do. It takes too much paint to get the walls back to a neutral color if you decide to leave there and have to get walls back to near original
my house is rented too, i'm actually doing my son's room in a few weeks, and we decided on 3 walls black and this really nice white/silver retro wall paper. as long as it is done tidy it'll be fine.
black is a difficult color to paint over but, if the landlors says it's okay, i'd inform him as to the color. he will need to seal it before repainting--or you may need to do so before you move out...
It cost more to change from black to other colours ,Plus it is odd
I would'nt paint it black. It would look like a cave!

I would paint the walls black, however, when ready to move i would primer and then paint the walls a neutral color so i could receive my deposit back. Then if you repaint the walls back to a neutral color the landlord should not have an issue. I think it is a great idea
