Does anyone have tips for painting the wall next to the washing machine (it's a very tight space...less than 2 inches...and we can't move the machine)?

There are rollers that are very thin with long handles for this kind of work. There are also pad painters that may fit. Go to your local paint, hardware or improvement center. Since you don't move the machine in and out, you only need to paint as far down as you can normally see.
