What preparation do I need to do before re-painting an exterior wall?

The wall is cream, although somewhat weathered. I am re-painting it cream but want to ensure a good finish.

Many thanks

All the above answers are sound advice. One thing I would add is a coat of stabilising solution. This really does make a difference to the finished job as you can be sure you`ve painted on a sound base. What preparation do I need to do before re-painting an exterior wall?
Wash it all down with a pressure washer if you have one...Scrape away any loose paint and sand to ensure smooth edges ...(they sometimes show through)..Give the wall two good coats of paint ....Job done..
the wall must be cleaned and all cracks and uneven patcheds must be smoothened out first
Use a pressure-washer on it and treat with fungicide if necessary.
Just make sure that any/all the loose flaky stuff is removed or the new coat of paint will just fall off.

That's about it - just use a good roller or brush
cream the wall
scrape off loose flakes, then paint with SANDTEX,good stuff.
