I have new bedding that is a dark brown and blue jacquard print and a matching ceiling light. All the furniture is dark brown. I don't want it to be too dark or too bright and I want the blue to pop in the bedding and not be washed out. I also haven't decided on carpet or ceiling color either. I'm painting an interior wall (bedroom) and in some places, some of the paint was sticking .........?

Get some Killz Primer and roll it over the spot where the paint is sticking. Wait for it to dry and then try painting over the primer. the killz should seal any moisture and solve the problem.

You can take sand paper and go over the surfaces any real loose paint should just come off. Then I would prime the walls before I started painting.

Painting a mural on my nephew's bedroom wall, what's the best kind of paint to use?

Frankly? It does not really matter. Regular wall paint with any artists acrylic or poster-paint mixed in for colour will do fine.
If you are painting on wallpaper or drywall it will make no difference what you used. After it has dried it will be as vulnerable as ever because the wallpaper itself is vulnerable.
As to cleaning... when was the last time you cleaned wallpaper? If they start painting on it themselves it makes no difference anyway.
If you want to go 'pro' you first prime your design with gesso and use on that what ever you'd use in your normal creative ventures. I have even seen murals done in colour pencil that were awesome. No protection on that either and it is 15 years old or so and is still as bright and clean as the first day.
On the other hand: It IS a childs bedroom. If you take that in consideration I'd at least stick to water soluable paints. Toxic or not isn't really relevant as dried paint will not be licked from the wall.... if they would do that you'd have other problems to consider I'd guess.

Put polka dots or stripes on it in glow in the dark colors for a really cool effect. Just stick with one wall though or you will feel like your are in a casket.

You have the right idea in that you don't want to paint too many of your walls black, b/c then your room would look a lot smaller than it is. Maybe you could do some sponging of a lighter shade on the black wall so it's not just a solid black and so that it doesn't stick out as much as it would alone.
I would also make whatever wall your bed will be against the wall that you paint black (if you didn't already think of that yourself!)

When we decorate long halls, we put a pattern or a darker color on the facing wall at the end of the hall to bring it closer. I hope this makes sense!
Also darker colors will show any imperfections in the walls. If your wall is nicked or scratched, the black color will enhance it. As will a gloss, so go with a flat or satin sheen of paint.
Other than that, black will be fine!

Given most bathroom lights have dim shades and don't have very large diameters (most of them focus on the mirror region), I don't think there would be too much problems with dark colors. The lighting is what generally sets the mood of the bathroom. Dark colors tend to work with dim lighting. I'm not too sure about horizontal stripes. I think solid coloring throughout, in addition to dim lighting, generally gives a bathroom a classier and calming mood. For example, by bathroom has dark beige walls with dim lighting. It's very relaxing.

I just spec'd a large interior with this system. It works well. If the wallpaper paste is reactivated by the primer the wallpaper must be removed or you will end up with a huge messAny advice on painting wall paper?
I agree with sanding the seams and priming the wall paper, but if at all possible, I would remove the paper before painting. If you paint it and the paper later starts to peel, it will look horrible.
Sand down the seams so they don't make ridges in your paint job. Use a coat of Kilz to make sure the color doesn't bleed through the paint. Then apply finish coats of paint.

Now, you might want to consider painting on a piece of smooth plywood instead. It would need a few coats of gesso before you you paint.
If you paint your mural on a panel then you would be able to take it with you if you move. Also if you live in an apartment the landlord won't have a fit (unless you have their permission ; ) because you painted on the walls.
After your done painting don't wash it for at least a month if you can wait longer than that do so, unless you have to wipe little handprints off. And wipe using water %26amp; dish soap.
If you wipe it hard the paint might lift.

I recommend a stain blocking primer, but prefer Zinsser. It just gives a better finish and goes on better than Kilz for me. You can tell how many coats of primer you require after the first coat has dried whether you can still see the red bleeding through it. You need to let it fully cure before applying the new latex color on top of it. You can do this by sinking your fingernail into an obscure area, if it leaves a mark, let it dry longer. If you live in a particularly humid area, paint takes longer to cure.Does anyone have any tips for painting a dark red wall a lighter color?
There is a sealing paint called Kilz, as mentioned by the answerer above. it is truly heinous stuff, and lead based. If you put on one coat (and sleep someplace else) letting it dry *completely*... Then apply another coat in the same way, nothing will show or bleed.
If you do not like lead, you can also seal it with an enamel - but if you want something else to stick to it you will have to get a non-gloss... not easy to find, and also heinous, use the same method... but if you use the enamel you may need 3 coats. do it in dead white. wait a week to be sure there is no bleed before painting with anything else.

Wash it down good and you'll need at least of couple of coats of primer, then paint whatever color you want. Primer is the key though....you might need 2-3 coats depending on how dark the color is.

I recommend a stain blocking primer, but prefer Zinsser. It just gives a better finish and goes on better than Kilz for me. You can tell how many coats of primer you require after the first coat has dried whether you can still see the red bleeding through it. You need to let it fully cure before applying the new latex color on top of it. You can do this by sinking your fingernail into an obscure area, if it leaves a mark, let it dry longer. If you live in a particularly humid area, paint takes longer to cure.Does anyone have any tips for painting a dark red wall a lighter color?
There is a sealing paint called Kilz, as mentioned by the answerer above. it is truly heinous stuff, and lead based. If you put on one coat (and sleep someplace else) letting it dry *completely*... Then apply another coat in the same way, nothing will show or bleed.
If you do not like lead, you can also seal it with an enamel - but if you want something else to stick to it you will have to get a non-gloss... not easy to find, and also heinous, use the same method... but if you use the enamel you may need 3 coats. do it in dead white. wait a week to be sure there is no bleed before painting with anything else.
surely prime it, then i guess paint it the color you want, or other you put the primer on paint it white and then paint it the color you want.

okay, so when I was 12 me and my friends thought it would be a great idea to have some fun with some sharpies on my painted walls. im sick and tired of looking at the ginormous cartoon dinosaur over and over again each morning. Another alternative is to get some Motsenbocker Lift Off # 3 for permanent ink. Spray onto your dinosaurs, agitate a bit with your finger and then BLOT off with tissue or TP.......most absorbent product, better than rags. See if you can get dino off that way. I suspect you'll still need to paint. But the Motsenbocker bottle is...what around $10 and will show parents you've grown up and ready to move beyond dinosaurs.
Or you can try painting over with the old paint and accepting you'll have some ';different'; colored patches that don't quite match the rest of the walls. Be careful, you don't want to spill or splatter paint elsewhere in the room.......move the furniture, cover everything including the floor.Painting over a painted wall with the same color?

Your best bet will be paint. Paint is much more versatile. If you decide to change decor, wallpaper is a beast to remove. It's a time-consuming process and in the end there will be repair work to do (patching from peeling wallpaper). It takes quite a bit of work to get the same smooth surface again.

You can make more paint colors by mixing sheades of two cans (we bought 3 shades of green, and white for the top half of the room. I mixed greens to get more shades so I had about 5 colors.)

It's easy to paint stripes. Use gentle release masking tape after you have painted one of the colors. Burnish the edges with a credit card or something stiff. Brush the paint up and down to avoid forcing paint under the tape. If you're a perfectionist you can use the bottom color of the paint to seal the edges of the tape. It really depends what color your walls are. If your walls are very light in color, you can keep the ceiling white. However if your walls are a tan color or darker, then it is best to paint the ceiling one shade lighter than your wall color. Otherwise, your ceiling doesn't blend well with the rest of the room and sticks out like a blast of bright light. Good question!

I did a room in those colors. Also the room I did was also long and narrow. I painted the room blue and the trim around the windows and baseboard and chair railing and ceiling white. It looks great. The white trim really makes the blue pop. I have received many compliments. I also used white curtains, but you can try white and blue stripes, but I wouldn't use solid blue curtains, it will darken the room too much and make the space feel closed in. Good luck.
White is a color that opens things up, so if you want your room to appear larger and longer, the shorter walls, should be blue, therefore, being the accent walls.
But...blue and white is a tad odd to begin with.
Id say pick 2 colors that are similar in color, because if its too dramatic it won't look good. What shade of blue is it? If it's a lighter blue, put it on the larger wall, and then white on the others.

I just painted my walls in my home, and I taped the ceilings so I would have a straight, even line. But when I took off the tape It was not straight and some of the paint came off with the tape... it looks really bad, does anyone have tips to make it look better?Wall Painting tips!?

Also, do not leave the tape on too long. You should be peeling the tape of 1-3 hours after completion and before the paint has had a chance to fully dry or you will experience the chipping you saw when removing.

Need help painting corner on a textured wall/ceiling corner?
I'm painting my room and the walls and ceiling are different colors. Does anyone know of a way I can get up to the corner without it looking uneven?? I can't use the painters tape because the paint just goes right under it.

Are you asking how to cut in at the ceiling? My Dad was a housepainter and here is what he did. Take a ruler and measure and lightly mark with a pencil a quarter to an eighth of an inch down from the ceiling all the way around the room. Take a yard stick and lightly pencil in a line from mark to mark so you have a straight line all the way around the room. If the ceiling needs to be painted do it before you paint the wall. Now, take a 2-inch angled brush and using the line as a guide paint a line all the way around the room UP TO that line. It won't matter if it is not right into the corner because the eye won't see it as such. You will just see the ceiling and the wall paint coming up to it. Be as neat as possible but don't get too hung up on it. If you are not using high contrast paint colors a slight uneven area here or there won't really matter.
After you do this you can continue to paint the wall as normal.
Another way to do it is to purchase a ceiling cut-in tool at your local or chain paint store. I think the brand is shur-line. This is a pad and device it fits into about 3 by 4. It has little wheels on one side. As long as you don't get paint on the wheels you can use this toold to get really good line on ceilings, door and windo frames, etc. I use both methods on ceilings. The shur line tool is under $10, I think. Good luck, be neat and methodical and you will do a great job.
sponging covers a lot of errors..however at your local hardware store you should be able to purchase an EDGER..it`s kinda` like a thin sponge but with a guide for straight edges..and they are really cheap. If you wash it out when you`re done you can use it again.

Take a ruler and measure and lightly mark with a pencil a quarter to an eighth of an inch down from the ceiling all the way around the room. Take a yard stick and lightly pencil in a line from mark to mark so you have a straight line all the way around the room. If the ceiling needs to be painted do it before you paint the wall. Now, take a 2-inch angled brush and using the line as a guide paint a line all the way around the room UP TO that line. It won't matter if it is not right into the corner because the eye won't see it as such. You will just see the ceiling and the wall paint coming up to it. Be as neat as possible but don't get too hung up on it. If you are not using high contrast paint colors a slight uneven area here or there won't really matter.
After you do this you can continue to paint the wall as normal.
Another way to do it is to purchase a ceiling cut-in tool at your local or chain paint store. I think the brand is shur-line. This is a pad and device it fits into about 3 by 4. It has little wheels on one side. As long as you don't get paint on the wheels you can use this toold to get really good line on ceilings, door and windo frames, etc. I use both methods on ceilings. The shur line tool is under $10, I think. Good luck, be neat and methodical and you will do a great job.
sponging covers a lot of errors..however at your local hardware store you should be able to purchase an EDGER..it`s kinda` like a thin sponge but with a guide for straight edges..and they are really cheap. If you wash it out when you`re done you can use it again.

this is what the man at Sherwin Williams told me when I painted the trim in my kitchen red. It still took two coats to get full coverage even with the primer.
Then when I painted an accent wall in my bedroom red, I first painted all four walls the main mauve color, no primer, and then two coats of the red on the feature. So it was the same amount of work both times.

If you don't have the paint or any idea who's brand it is your best bet would be to buy a aerosol can of ';Cover Stain'; and shield the area with tape and plastic or a piece of card board and lightly spray, 9 out of 10 times it's a good match. If you're ever watched any of the DIY home improvement shows, you've seen pink primer used first in order to paint a wall red. Even then, though, it can take 2 or 3 coats for a red wall.
Paint vertical lines, then go over that with horizontal lines.

Since you've already started ... keep going! I'm not kidding. The paint can when I painted my white wall to be deep red said it could take ';5-7 layers.';
I used a tinted primer and STILL used 3 .... so just make sure you are using a rollar since it's the easiet choice and put on another layer!

The best thing to do is tint some primer red, then go back over the walls. This will add to your expense, but it sounds like you'll be spending more money to get it even anyway.

You should always start this sort of job with a primer. You would've saved a lot of paint/coats. I would consult your local paint store to see if they remommend starting over or if they know of a product that can be used retro-actively.
Reva P is right - starting with a deep pink primer or even a grey primer is the way to go.
One tip I can offer is NOT to use a thick nap roller. Try something less than 3/8”. Because red paint is so thin it tends to splatter, run and drip - the lower pile roller helps control this.
Red paint is very thin thin because the amount of pigment needed to get a true red color is huge. Red paints can be up to around 30% pigment and 70% base. It is the paint base which covers the pigment only adds the tint.
With so little base you could be looking at 5 coats in total. I have done it - it was hell. :)

If you're ever watched any of the DIY home improvement shows, you've seen pink primer used first in order to paint a wall red. Even then, though, it can take 2 or 3 coats for a red wall.
Paint vertical lines, then go over that with horizontal lines.

Since you've already started ... keep going! I'm not kidding. The paint can when I painted my white wall to be deep red said it could take ';5-7 layers.';
I used a tinted primer and STILL used 3 .... so just make sure you are using a rollar since it's the easiet choice and put on another layer!

The best thing to do is tint some primer red, then go back over the walls. This will add to your expense, but it sounds like you'll be spending more money to get it even anyway.

You should always start this sort of job with a primer. You would've saved a lot of paint/coats. I would consult your local paint store to see if they remommend starting over or if they know of a product that can be used retro-actively.
Reva P is right - starting with a deep pink primer or even a grey primer is the way to go.
One tip I can offer is NOT to use a thick nap roller. Try something less than 3/8”. Because red paint is so thin it tends to splatter, run and drip - the lower pile roller helps control this.
Red paint is very thin thin because the amount of pigment needed to get a true red color is huge. Red paints can be up to around 30% pigment and 70% base. It is the paint base which covers the pigment only adds the tint.
With so little base you could be looking at 5 coats in total. I have done it - it was hell. :)

Get some Killz Primer and roll it over the spot where the paint is sticking. Wait for it to dry and then try painting over the primer. the killz should seal any moisture and solve the problem.
I don't believe its your fault,there could be two reasons I know of. The walls may have gotten wet behind the existing paint or some one originally painted over grease and or dirt without cleaning and priming. You can take sand paper and go over the surfaces any real loose paint should just come off. Then I would prime the walls before I started painting.private myspace

absolutely use a light colored primer. try a local paint shop or Home Depot and they can usually custom-mix color you pick out.

yeah. you probably painted a water-based paint over an oil-based paint. my suggestion sand down any areas that have bubbled. wash the entire wall with liquid sander (follow the instructions carefully). then prime the wall with any quality paint primer/sealer. by then you should be able to paint anything you want without any further problems.

First of all you didn't state the finish on the wall prior to this painting. If it had been an oil base paint under you would have seen signs immediately in the first coat.
You also don't explain the bubbling,,, and I wonder, was the paint shaken or stirred so recently before the second coat that it was still full of air bublles,,,OR your applicator...IE: Roller was an incorrect nap';? Normal, small air bubbles often appear, pop, and can be gently rolled in,
How long did you wait to apply the second coat?
If in fact these aren't strictly Bubbles, then possibly the wall was dirty? AS in film from cooking, nicotine, etc.
Finally,,,and no real dig at Lowes, but I never buy a store brand paint,,,maybe silly, but I have my preferences.

My mom talked to a guy at home depot and he said it's okay to paint over wall paper, it just won't be as good quality. I have to paint the room by myself so is there anything I have to do to prepare the walls? some of the wall paper is ripped off in certain areas. Am I supposed to sand paper that down or something? What's the best way to get a clean/crisp line when painting different colors on a textured wall?
I've painted two bedrooms already and so frustrated that I couldn't make a clean/crisp line between two different paint colors. I'm painting walls and where walls and ceiling meet. I am spending so much time retouching even if I use blue tape all around. The paint seeps in between the grooves of the textured walls. Please advise. But don't think because retailers and manufacturers tell the public its so easy anyone can do it that you'll have professional results.Painting is an artisan trade that is as skilled as carpentry,auto mechanics,computer programing etc. I've been a professional for 26 years and to this day I can still become frustrated with ceiling lines that are crooked because of bad plasters or bad drywallers thus making it difficult at best for me to produce a straight edge.What's the best way to get a clean/crisp line when painting different colors on a textured wall?

We've been doing this on the job for 45 years. Go to Home Depot and buy a pint of ';Diff'; you mix it with boiling water, use rubber gloves, cover the area with plastic and use a sponge mop. Mop the Diff on the wallpaper and go around the room, by the time you finish, go around the room again, you should see the paper comng loose. Wait a moment, then go around a third time. This should do it.

That is way cheaper than using all those chemicals that you have to pay big money for, smell and clean off after the paper is down. With the steamer, all you have to do is pick up the paper. With luck, the underlying surface has been painted so that the water will not damage it. Otherwise, you will have to fill gouges with drywall compound, sand it smooth, and prime it with a good oil base primer. A light sanding thereafter will finish preparation for whatever comes next.

Easy designs for painting a wall?
I have one room, fairly small, and i need to paint one wall of it with something fun for a teenage kid. I have absolutely no previous painting experience and i was wondering if you could give me some simple, but cool looking ideas for this wall.

What does it mean when painting a wall ';It needs two coats';.?
When painting a wall. What does it mean when it is said, ';need two coats';? Does it mean one coat primer one coat finish or one coat primer two coats finish?What does it mean when painting a wall ';It needs two coats';.?
Primer is already assumed. (undercoat is oil based primer) for oil paint finish-kitchens and baths and woodwork. All surfaces need a primer.
So, 2 color coats.(I use the term color for finish coats). The first is the main body coat, so you are just hauling azz to get it covered....but no one is perfect to do it 100% even in one coat, so the second is more of a ';just to be sure I got everything coat which makes it more even color finish';.
Besides you will not be able to cover black with white in just one coat. Nor Red over green. Or green over red. Or any big change in color.
Never.
Usually, the primer is white or 1/2 the color of the finish. this is so you can see what you have done with the first color coat. And as the first color coat does not cover the primer 100%., it is easy to see what you are doing the second time around with the color coat.
And this is the minimum.
People who want a good finish ask for 3 color coats.(Higher end homes). Primer is only used on bare walls, excessively patched walls or when you are not sure what kind of paint(oil or latex) is on the walls.

When I did this, I waited to long and when I peeled the tape off, I peeled the paint off too. I waited until it was dry, bad idea. Take it off while it is still wet.

I was buying paint at Lowe's when someone asked the same question. The manager said to start removing the tape before the paint is dried. this is what the man at Sherwin Williams told me when I painted the trim in my kitchen red. It still took two coats to get full coverage even with the primer.
Then when I painted an accent wall in my bedroom red, I first painted all four walls the main mauve color, no primer, and then two coats of the red on the feature. So it was the same amount of work both times.

3M hooks work very well if you follow the directions. Make sure you get the right size hook for the job. I used 3M hooks

They can dry out and fall down. If you are talking dry wall, most walls are. The only practical way is by nail. But if it is dry wall the hole is very easy to repair with Spackle and paint.
Get a tube of NO MORE NAILS by Le Page at a hardware store. It looks like caulking. I have attached a shelve to the wall and an under cabinet light with a few globs of the stuff. Works great.

How do i remove Blu Tack stains/marks from my wall without re-painting?
I've taken all my posters down and all remains of Blu Tack have been removed.
But there seems to be stains left behind or marks.

Hello all,
I want to paint my bedroom wall, but i dont want it boring and plan. I want one wall to be like a peice of art or something different. I want some websites to look at for ideas and inspiration or something. Any help would be great :)

I took pictures inside the Merrimack Caves, it was so beautiful with all the colored stalactites/stalagmites.
I downloaded the pics on to my computer and then printed one on to clear transparency film, (at Staples 20 sheets $11) rented an overhead projector ($12 for 3 hrs.) set it up in my room and displayed the image on one entire wall, turned out the lights and traced it. I colored it in with paint and chalk, it turned out so awesome.Need some help with painting my bedroom wall??
My 18yo daughter recently painted her room a deep lavender blue, and for the feature wall, she painted the wall white, then splatter painted the entire wall, with colours matching the cushions on her bed - aqua, orange, purple, lemon and the lavender blue on the other walls.
She framed the entire wall with a timber surround painted in white...and it looks fantastic - like a huge piece of modern art!.
The room looks fresh, modern and artistic.
wallpaper shops would be the best place to find something different from plain paint or plain wallpaper they have some great wall murals of (my favourite) is tigers they are perfect and coming down a track to the water it makes you feel you are on safari
you may find things on How to on austar or foxtel or have a plain coloured wall and hang some pictures on it or have a wall rug or even one of those animals on a blanket and as the price is cheap you can have a few and have them on the bed one week and the wall the next
Why not try some mural of your own ideas you can always cover it when you are fed up with it I saw on that wa a large print and it looked like a window in the wall with some startling views have a look at wallhangings.com or wall paintig.com go searching

Can a wall color code work for different painting brands?
Today we got a custom paint code (F14-1) for Dutch Boy.
It was pretty expensive, so we're gonna go to Home Depot tomorrow because we got a gift card. Will that code work for a different brand? For example, like Behr or Glidden?
And will the color still look the same?Can a wall color code work for different painting brands?
Take either your dry stir stick or dab a good sized drop of paint (about an inch square) and fairly thick drop onto heavy card stock and let dry...then you can have the store colour match the paint..when you get home, be sure to mix some of the old paint together with the new paint so it will blend well when applied to your walls. The dry paint stick is really the best for then to match the colour..the colour codes are different in each store and each brand of paint, so the code won't work, but sometimes they can look up certain colours and cross check them to use with some brands, just don't count on this.private myspace

Painting interior wall with craft paint?

Make ';X's'; and ';O's'; from magnet sheets you can get from craft stores. (You can paint them, too, with your color choices.)

paint a pretty color you like then go to a hobby store and get the big stick on disney characters.....it makes a really cool kids wall....good luck

Mine was 2 and he picked bubbles (and Dora lol we didnt care we got him both) with lots of colors
well if it is a boy then choose some type of book he woyld like or mabey if he likes space then paint the room like a giant observatory but rember if the room is a dark color like black then it would get really hot(temperture wise). if it is a girl paint the room like as in the boys suggestion but if it is like she likes the barbie fary things then paint it like the room is like a giant garden like from alice and wonderland
Stencil or paint yourself kids material on the walls. Take a part of the wall and mask off a big area for a nice big chalk board and get yourself some chalk board paint and most of all ask your kids what they'd like not us, it's their room!!! Good luck Les the painter

My wife and I painted a room we plan to use for a nursery someday. She's not pregnant, so obviously we don't know what the sex will be. We chose pale green, yellow and blue. We painted one wall and the closet green and the opposite wall blue with the other two walls a nice, bright yellow.
We paired this up with a yellow, green and blue curtain that filters the light coming in and we have some quilts that use the same colors too. It was an easy job, and looks really cheerful. Plus, we found out later that it's kind of in style to paint baby rooms this way.
I had a room that a boy and a girl used so I couldn't be too feminine or masculine. I painted the walls light blue, then with a big sponge, I added puffy clouds. Then in the corner I painted a sun. It was so so so easy. I am not at all creative and I was worried I would mess it up but it was great. I just used a big puffy cleaning sponge, like the kind you would use to wash your car. It was really cute and cheerful.

my aunt used sponges and cut them into different shapes and stamped them all over the wall in different colors. It is so cute.
When I had a small day care program in my home, I put paint on the children's palms and helped them press their palms against the wall a couple times, turning slightly each time. Then we painted stems for these flowers and leaves, too. It looked really cute and four years later whenever those children come to visit me they can still pick out which flowers they made. We used a sunny yellow for our flowers against a sky blue base coat, but it could work with any color scheme.

well if it is a boy then choose some type of book he woyld like or mabey if he likes space then paint the room like a giant observatory but rember if the room is a dark color like black then it would get really hot(temperture wise). if it is a girl paint the room like as in the boys suggestion but if it is like she likes the barbie fary things then paint it like the room is like a giant garden like from alice and wonderland
Stencil or paint yourself kids material on the walls. Take a part of the wall and mask off a big area for a nice big chalk board and get yourself some chalk board paint and most of all ask your kids what they'd like not us, it's their room!!! Good luck Les the painter

My wife and I painted a room we plan to use for a nursery someday. She's not pregnant, so obviously we don't know what the sex will be. We chose pale green, yellow and blue. We painted one wall and the closet green and the opposite wall blue with the other two walls a nice, bright yellow.
We paired this up with a yellow, green and blue curtain that filters the light coming in and we have some quilts that use the same colors too. It was an easy job, and looks really cheerful. Plus, we found out later that it's kind of in style to paint baby rooms this way.
I had a room that a boy and a girl used so I couldn't be too feminine or masculine. I painted the walls light blue, then with a big sponge, I added puffy clouds. Then in the corner I painted a sun. It was so so so easy. I am not at all creative and I was worried I would mess it up but it was great. I just used a big puffy cleaning sponge, like the kind you would use to wash your car. It was really cute and cheerful.

my aunt used sponges and cut them into different shapes and stamped them all over the wall in different colors. It is so cute.
When I had a small day care program in my home, I put paint on the children's palms and helped them press their palms against the wall a couple times, turning slightly each time. Then we painted stems for these flowers and leaves, too. It looked really cute and four years later whenever those children come to visit me they can still pick out which flowers they made. We used a sunny yellow for our flowers against a sky blue base coat, but it could work with any color scheme.

There are rollers that are very thin with long handles for this kind of work. There are also pad painters that may fit. Go to your local paint, hardware or improvement center. Since you don't move the machine in and out, you only need to paint as far down as you can normally see.

Someone else posted this answer-but I tried it and it does work.
You're really getting into some work but I think it can be done. First you will have to sand the entire surface to give it some ';tooth'; for paint to adhere to. You will then have to wash it all down with a cleaner called TSP that you should be able to find at any hardware or home improvement store. Rinse this off REALLY well. Use a good grade primer and paint on top of that. I would suggest a couple of coats of clear polyurethane on top of the paint on any flat surfaces that will take wear and tear (ledges, etc.) The real secret is going to be a good sanding, a good cleaning, and a good grade of primer.How would I go about painting a marlite wall?

Those majic eraser's everyone is talking about will not only take off the permanent marker, but also your paint! So, you'll have to have enough paint to cover it back up. Or you could sand it off alitlle and then repaint. I'v tried to paint over permanant marker and it ends up bleeding through. Not right away either. But after a few days it makes it through. If your wall is rough after that process, use some rough grit sandpaper and an electric sander, hand held. If you don't have a sander you can do it by hand by wrapping sandpaper around a piece of wood about 4-6 inches long or whatever size fits in your hand well. It can take awhile but the results are beautiful. Another thing you can do is use spackle or sheet rock mud to smooth the wall. It is difficult to tell you the very best one of these to use on your wall since you didn't say if it is REALLY rough.

using your ideas of tree and or a vine - I would paint a white picket fence as the 'headboard' and then fill in with the plants and or silhouette by using the black for the plants.
Paint the wall with a blue sky and big puffy white clouds and then use some clear glow in the dark paint to makes some stars. So you'll have something for the night and day for your wall.
You can add things like a forest or vines coming up into the sky..but the sky will put a foundation down for you to get started with anything else you may want.
I do murals, and this is the first one going up when I get a house.
A nice graphic design, modern...the olive pattern or the TV pattern. Or maybe a branch with cherry blossoms, or a cool pin-up girl...or, if that seems too much use a can of flat paint and a can of high gloss paint and create a subtle design.
You could do a tree (as you suggested) and then put a landscape (mountains, a temple, a river, whatever you want) in the background. You definetely have the possiblity to make an artistic statement with your painting and room.
An angel to watch over you.
